The Ultimate Guide to Water Based Aluminum Paste: Properties, Applications, and Suppliers

In the modern coatings, inks and plastic processing industries, how to achieve high-gloss metallic effects while ensuring environmental compliance has always been the core challenge faced by R&D and process engineers. Water based aluminum paste has become an important alternative to traditional solvent-based aluminum pastes due to its low VOC emissions, good dispersibility and stability. However, in actual production, water based aluminum paste from different batches often has problems such as uneven gloss, particle sedimentation or incompatibility with the resin system. This poses risks to production efficiency and product consistency. This article will provide you with a systematic analysis of water based aluminum paste and help you find the best balance between environmental protection and performance.

What Is Water Based Aluminum Paste?

Water based aluminum paste is a high-performance industrial slurry that uses water as the dispersion medium and uniformly disperses and stably suspends metallic aluminum powder. It is mainly used in coatings, inks, plastic coatings, and other decorative or functional applications, and can form a high-gloss metallic effect on the product surface.

Compared with traditional solvent-based aluminum pastes, water based aluminum paste has advantages such as low VOC emissions, environmental safety, non-flammability, easy storage and transportation. It also better complies with increasingly strict environmental regulations in regions like Europe, America, and Asia-Pacific (such as REACH, RoHS). At the same time, water based aluminum paste continuously optimizes its particle dispersion, gloss performance, and process compatibility. It can meet the demands for metallic effects in high-end coatings, printing, and plastic products.

In industrial production, water based aluminum paste not only serves decorative functions but also has significant impacts on product performance, construction techniques, and subsequent weather resistance and stability. Therefore, its technical parameters and application characteristics need to be highly focused on during the procurement and research and development stages.

What are the basic types of water based aluminum paste?

Water based aluminum paste, based on the differences in aluminum powder form, solid content, and application process, can generally be classified into the following categories:

1. Classification by aluminum powder form

• Flake Aluminum Paste: The particles are in a thin sheet shape, with high gloss and strong reflective effect, suitable for automotive coatings, metal paints, and decorative coatings.
• Spherical or granular paste: The particles are uniform and well-dispersed, with soft gloss, more suitable for industrial coatings, inks, and plastic spraying applications.

2. Classification by solid content

• High solid content water based aluminum paste: The solid content is usually 60–70%, with prominent gloss and metallic effect, suitable for high-end coatings or special inks.
• Medium-low solid content water based aluminum paste: The solid content is 40–60%, with good fluidity, facilitating construction and formula adjustment.

3. Classification by application field or function

• Coating-specific aluminum paste: High gloss, stable dispersion, long-term suspension, suitable for architectural paints, industrial paints, and automotive paints.
• Ink-specific aluminum paste: Fine particles, strong compatibility with resin systems, used in packaging printing and decorative printing.
• Plastic/matrix-specific aluminum paste: Excellent heat resistance and weather resistance, suitable for plastic spraying, injection molding, and decorative matrix.

By understanding these types, you can choose the most suitable water based aluminum paste type based on gloss requirements, construction process, resin system, and environmental regulations, ensuring product performance and production stability.

Key Characteristics of Water Based Aluminum Paste

The performance indicators of water based aluminum paste directly determine the metal effect and stability of coatings, inks or plastic products.

• Luster and metal effect: The particle size, shape and uniformity of the aluminum powder determine the final gloss and reflective effect.
• Dispersion and stability: High-quality water based aluminum paste must remain uniformly suspended in water for a long time to prevent sedimentation or agglomeration. The types and concentrations of dispersants, pH value, solid content and grinding process all affect the dispersion stability.
• Environmental protection and compliance with regulations: Low VOC emissions, no harmful solvents, in compliance with international environmental protection regulations (REACH, RoHS, EPA VOC Limits).
• Viscosity and construction adaptability: Viscosity affects the construction performance of coatings or inks, such as spray leveling, print thickness control, etc. Products with high solid content need to balance fluidity to ensure smooth processing and coating.
• Chemical compatibility: The compatibility with resin systems (acrylic, epoxy, polyurethane, etc.) directly affects the adhesion and durability of the product. Different formulations need to conduct pre-experiments for the aluminum paste to avoid sedimentation or uneven luster issues.
• Weather resistance and durability: High-quality water based aluminum paste should maintain stable luster, anti-yellowing, UV resistance and water resistance in the coating. This is particularly important for long-life products such as automotive paints and outdoor building paints.

What are the key factors influencing the selection of water based aluminum paste?

In industrial applications, the performance of water based aluminum paste directly affects the final effect and production stability of coatings, inks, and plastic products. When choosing a suitable water based aluminum paste, the following key factors should be considered comprehensively:

1. Aluminum powder particle size and shape

Particle size: Smaller particle size results in softer gloss, suitable for printing inks and fine decorative coatings; larger particle size has a more reflective effect, suitable for metallic paints or automotive paints.

Shape: Flaky aluminum powder has high gloss and strong reflection; spherical aluminum powder has good dispersion and smooth application.

2. Solid content (Solid Content)

High solid content (60–70%) is suitable for high-gloss and high-metallic appearance coatings, but the viscosity is higher, requiring matching of construction techniques.

Medium to low solid content (40–60%) is suitable for spraying, printing inks, and plastic applications, with good fluidity and easy mixing.

3. Dispersion and stability

High-quality water based aluminum paste needs to be stably suspended in water medium for a long time to prevent particle settling or agglomeration.

The type of dispersant, grinding process, pH value, and the use of anti-oxidants all affect stability.

4. Chemical compatibility

water based aluminum paste needs to be highly compatible with coating resin systems (acrylic, epoxy, polyurethane, etc.). Otherwise, it may cause sedimentation, uneven gloss, or reduced adhesion.

5. Construction and process requirements

Coatings, inks, or plastic processing have different requirements for viscosity, leveling, thickness control, and spraying adaptability.

High viscosity will affect construction, while low viscosity may result in an unclear metallic effect.

6. Environmental and regulatory requirements

VOC emissions, REACH compliance, and RoHS compliance are important considerations for the selection of water based aluminum paste, especially for products exported to Europe, Asia-Pacific markets.

7. Weather resistance and long-term performance

High-quality water based aluminum paste must ensure that the coating maintains stable gloss, resistance to ultraviolet rays, resistance to yellowing, and water resistance over a long period of exposure.
